वरं शून्या शाला...

वरं शून्या शाला न च खलु वरो दुष्ट वृषभो
वरं वेश्या पत्नी न पुनरविनीता कुलवधूः ।
वरं वासोऽरण्ये न पुनरविवेकाधिपपुरे
वरं प्राणत्यागो न पुनरधमानामुपगमः ॥ (हितोपदेशः ४, १३१)

I prefer an empty stable rather than a wild bull in it
I prefer a whore wife rather than an indecent housewife
I prefer a shelter in woods rather than in a state ruled by idiots
I prefer to die rather than be in the circle of scoundrels.
